    comes through authentic connection

A fund ready for donors. The Emotional CPR (eCPR) Fund supports a public health promotion campaign to equip community members, families, peer supporters, and service providers with the skills and confidence to effectively support individuals in emotional crisis and distress into recovery.

Where the problem lies

We live in a world of uncertainty, fear, and a breakdown of our communities. Our fear of living in a world filled with natural and unnatural traumas is described by authorities as failures within individuals. Presently this fear has led to an increased pressure to label people as mentally ill and enforce harsh treatments upon them. We are mistakenly told by the media that people who are emotionally distressed are more dangerous than others. So people in distress are told that their understandable reactions to traumatic events are signs of their illness, are quickly referred to professionals, and given medication.

Help is on the way

What if we lived in a world where every member of the community felt comfortable assisting their neighbor, friend, or family member through emotional distress by being with them in authentically human ways. What if everyone of us learned that when we listen to another person’s pain with our whole heart as well as our ears we can help them find the courage and strength to reconnect with their community.  Over the last 5 years, many of us who have gone through recovery from our own emotional pain have developed such an approach, which we call Emotional CPR or eCPR.  This is more than mental health, it is public health. Just as CardioPulmonary Resuscitation or CPR teaches the general public how to assist another person whose physical heart has stopped, eCPR teaches the public how to be with a person so they can restart their emotional heart. It is a form of heart-to-heart resuscitation. eCPR is actually a way of connecting with the healer within each of us.  eCPR is designed to teach all community members to assist others through an emotional crisis by three simple steps:

C = Connecting, P = emPowering, and R = Revitalizing

  • The Connecting process of eCPR involves deepening our capacity to listen, to be fully present, and to create a sense of safety
  • The emPowering process helps people better understand how to feel empowered as well as to feel more hopeful and engaged in life.
  • Revitalizating comes from people feeling full of unexpected energy to reconnect with their loved ones, their wellness, and their creativity.

When people are certified in eCPR, they can help others recover from severe emotional distress, trauma, and/or disasters, thus preventing unnecessary use of costly hospital emergency rooms and mental health services.

Feeling connected, empowered, and revitalized helps people once again feel part of the community.  When people feel that they have a meaningful and valued place in the community, they can share these gifts with others creating a ripple effect. Thus, eCPR helps build stronger and more resilient communities.
