Change is Fostered by Accurate and Empathic Understanding

Many people have difficult and at times disabling life challenges they have not been able to address, even with a series of mental health treatments. As a result they feel hopeless or ashamed of their problems and do not know what to do next. Therapeutic Assessment uses standard psychological tests as “empathy magnifiers” to identify and understand clients’ blocks to change.

Therapeutic Assessment is a paradigm in which psychological testing is used to help people understand themselves better and find solutions to their persistent problems.

As part of a deeply respectful humanistic intervention, Therapeutic Assessment engenders a process of self-discovery that helps people achieve new, accurate, useful, and compassionate understandings of their difficulties and explore new solutions that are within their reach.

Clients and Assessors Work Together to Find Viable Next Steps

Therapeutic Assessment is based on the belief that skilled psychological assessors can consult to clients and bring new perspectives on their struggles, but that clients are THE experts on themselves. Therefore, clients are involved as collaborators in every step of a Therapeutic Assessment: identifying goals for the assessment, helping to understand test results, linking the test results to daily life, and deciding with whom and how to share assessment results.  Even small children who are assessed are involved as much as possible and usually learn about the results of a Therapeutic Assessment via a personalized fable written for them at the end of the assessment. By actively involving clients in understanding their complex problems in living and finding their next steps, we make sure that new solutions make sense to them, are personally viable, and fit with clients’ values and culture.  We also find that clients feel empowered to take future actions on their behalf.

Over 20 Years of Research Supports the Efficacy of Therapeutic Assessment

The first published research study of Therapeutic Assessment appeared in 1992. Since then, a variety of controlled research studies and case studies have been published applying TA to a wide range of clinical problems (such as major depression, psychosis, intractable personality disorders, severe trauma, child behavior problems, alcohol abuse, eating disorders, self harm in adolescents, and chronic pain) and with different types of clients (college students, children, teens, families, couples, outpatients, inpatients, clients entering residential treatment, etc.).  Demonstrated benefits to clients include reduced psychological and medical symptoms, increased self-esteem and hope about the future, and better response to treatments that follow a Therapeutic Assessment. Many clients leave a Therapeutic Assessment with a more coherent, accurate, useful, and compassionate understanding of why they struggle and of how to move forward. More research is needed, especially to understand why Therapeutic Assessment works. Because TA is effective with many types of problems and appears to boost the efficacy of different types of interventions, research on Therapeutic Assessment may lead to breakthroughs in developing a trans-theoretical model of psychological change.

Professional Training Opportunities in Therapeutic Assessment Are Urgently Needed

The Therapeutic Assessment Institute consists of 17 professionals from 6 different countries around the world who are certified in Therapeutic Assessment. There are centers for practice and training in Therapeutic Assessment in Austin, Texas; Milan, Italy; and Tokyo, Japan. Each year, more and more clinicians are interested in going through the time-consuming and rigorous process of becoming competent in Therapeutic Assessment. The Therapeutic Assessment Fund will provide scholarships for trainees, funding for workshops, and support to develop training materials. Training is even more urgent because universities around the world are offering less and less training in psychological testing, in part because of widespread dissatisfaction with the current medical model that dominates traditional psychological and neuropsychological assessment.
